Die Arbeit des Bureaus of Standards
auf dem Gebiet der Steelpans

1988 wurde innerhalb des "Trinidad und Tobago Bureau of Standards" ein
Komitee zur Standardisierung des Pans gegründet. Dieses Komitee besteht aus
Tunern, Arrangeuren, Vertretern von Van Leer (Grosser Fasskonzern), Lincoln
Enterprises (Panmanufaktur in Port of Spain), Pan Trinbago (Pan
Dachorganisation) und anderen Organisationen.
Das Projekt des Komitees teilt sich in verschiedene Bereiche der
Standardisierung auf: Erklärung der präzisen Bedeutung der Begriffe, die in
der Panwelt gebraucht werden, Untersuchungen von Blech, Mantellängen,
meistgebrauchten Tonanordnungen...
Es geht vor allem darum, die Produktion zu vereinfachen, die Kommunikation
und das gegenseitige Verständnis zu erleichtern, die Integration von
Panspielern in irgendeiner Steelband auf der Welt zu fördern.
Die Standardisierung geht langsam voran. Bis jetzt wurde an einer
Bestandesaufnahme sämtlicher Paninstrumente in Trinidad gearbeitet.
Das Pan ist immer noch in Entwicklung und somit noch nicht reif für eine
Standardisierung.

Definitionen aus

Steel Pan
The steelpan is a musical instrument indigenious to Trinidad and Tobago. It
is a definite pitch percussion instrument in the idiophone class,
traditionally made from a steel drum or steel container. The metallic
playing surface is concave with a skirt attached. The plaing surface is
divided into convex sections by channels, grooves and/or bores. Each convex
section is a note tuned to a definite pitch. The convex sections are played
by striking with pan sticks to produce musical tones.
Pan Man
A general term for a person involved with the steel pan movement either as a
tuner, pan constructor, arranger, panist, administrator or as an assistant
to apprentice in any of these categories.
Panist
A person skilled in the art of playing a steel pan instrument, either as a
soloist or as a member of a steel band.
Tuner
A person who has acquired the technical skill of transforming the steel drum
or steel container to the tuned steel pan instrument. The tuner also blend
the instruments.
Conventional steel band
A steel band in which all the instruments of the steel pan family are
chromatic. The instruments are suspended from pan racks or pan stands.
Pan-around-the-neck steel band
A steel band of limited range, reminiscent of old time steel band. These
instruments are usually hung around the neck or shoulder. The range of notes
on the various instruments are not chromatic except for the tenor pan and
second pan.
